How I work

You are not a diagnosis. You are a whole life in motion.

I take a holistic, person-in-environment approach: the difficulties we carry rarely begin and end inside one person. They take shape within families and generations, cultures and histories, economies and politics, screens and neighbourhoods. Therapy with me means looking at the whole picture — collaboratively, at your pace, in a values-oriented framework that meets you exactly where you are.

Person-in-environment

We consider the socio-economic and political situations you live within, your culture and historical becomings, your group's place in the wider social framework, intergenerational threads of trauma, gender and sexuality, identity and narrative. Context isn't background noise — it's often where healing begins.

Collaborative, always

I check in regularly about how we're understanding your situation and where treatment is heading, so the plan stays yours. Evidence-based practice, applied to the individual in front of me — not to an abstracted, averaged-out population.

Creative & solution-focused

Identity exploration, new perspectives, new habits, new ways of seeing and being — with yourself, and together with community, occupation, hobbies, and imaginings. Therapy as a place where something genuinely new can emerge.

Two humans, co-regulating

Beneath every technique is a simpler truth: therapy is an encounter between two accepting human beings. In that steadiness, deep fears and old traumas can be safely uncovered — and so can hopes, dreams, and the quiet joy of simply existing.

A specialty of the practice

Attention is the currency of our age. Yours is worth protecting.

Social media is a genuinely new thing in human life — and it doesn't fit neatly into the older frameworks we use to understand ourselves. Endless feeds, notifications, comparison, and the sheer acceleration of technologically-driven life pull at something finite in each of us: our attention.

  • The modern mediascape — how feeds, platforms, and algorithms shape mood, self-image, and relationships.
  • ADHD and attention difficulties — assessment-informed support, practical strategies, and self-understanding without shame.
  • Doomscrolling, overwhelm, and burnout — finding a livable pace inside an accelerating world.

Home visits

I come to you. For some people — because of mobility, anxiety, caregiving, or simple preference — home is where real conversation becomes possible. Your lamp, your couch, your terms.

Flexible scheduling

Life doesn't run 9 to 5, and neither does this practice. Evenings, alternative arrangements, and rhythms that work around shift work, school, and family are all on the table.

Kevin Mitchell, PhD, MSW, RSW — psychotherapist About me

Kevin Mitchell, PhD, MSW, RSW

Hello — I'm Kevin. I'm a therapist who believes people are not problems to be fixed but lives to be understood: shaped by families and histories, cultures and systems, and always capable of becoming something new.

My Master of Social Work grounds me in practical, relational care — and it means many extended health plans can reimburse our sessions. My PhD in Cultural Studies gives this practice something rarer: a systems and structural analysis rooted in philosophical theories of emergence, creativity, newness, and the joy of existence. In plain terms? I take seriously both the deep fears and traumas that weigh on a life, and the genuine possibility that something unprecedented can grow from within it.

In session, that philosophy becomes simple and human: two people, co-regulated and accepting of one another, making space for what's hardest to say — and for what's still hoped for. We work with your identity and your narrative, your values and your circumstances, and we build from there.

Above all, this is a nonjudgmental space — confidential, safe, and trusted — where you can openly explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours without fear of being reduced to a diagnosis or a category. I offer that exploration with unconditional positive regard: whatever you bring into the room, you are met as a whole person, worthy of care exactly as you are.

Fees & access

Cost shouldn't be the reason you go without support.

Rates are discussed openly, person to person — the same way everything else in this practice works.

Free consultation

$0 / 15 minutes

A relaxed, no-obligation conversation. Share a little about what's bringing you here, ask me anything, and see how it feels. Fit matters more than anything else in therapy — let's check ours first.

Sliding scale sessions

Scaled to your budget

We'll land on a rate together that respects both your financial reality and the sustainability of the practice. Insurance receipts provided — many extended health plans cover services by an MSW.

Home visits — Winnipeg

Session + travel

In-person sessions at your home in the Winnipeg area. Travel is worked out together based on distance, so it stays fair and predictable.

Not sure what your plan covers? Look for "social worker (MSW)" or "counselling services" in your extended health benefits, or ask me — I'm happy to help you figure it out before we begin.

Good to know

Questions people often ask.

Where do you offer therapy?
Online video sessions are available to anyone physically located in Ontario or Manitoba at the time we meet. If you're in or around Winnipeg, I also offer in-person home visits.
Will my insurance cover this?
Many extended health plans cover sessions with a Master of Social Work (MSW). I provide receipts you can submit for reimbursement. It's worth a quick check of your plan — and I'm glad to help you interpret it.
How does the sliding scale work?
Simply: we talk about it. You tell me what's realistic for your budget and situation, and we agree on a rate together. No forms, no proof of income, no awkwardness — just an honest conversation, which is good practice for therapy anyway.
What happens in the free 15-minute consultation?
It's a relaxed call — by video or phone. You can share a little about what's bringing you here, ask about how I work, and get a feel for whether we click. There's no obligation to book afterwards, and no hard feelings if it's not the right fit.
Do you only work with young people?
No — I work with people of all ages. I currently see many youth, and I have a particular specialty in attention, ADHD, and life in the mediascape, but adults navigating those same currents (and everything else life brings) are very welcome here.
What is a "person-in-environment" approach?
It means I don't treat your struggles as if they exist in a vacuum. We look at the systems you live within — economic pressures, culture, politics, family history, intergenerational trauma, gender and sexuality, your community and its place in the world — because understanding the environment is often the key to changing your experience within it.
How do the Winnipeg home visits work?
I come to your home at a time that works for you. Because travel is involved, we work out that portion of the cost together based on distance, and add it to the session fee. Reach out and we'll figure out what makes sense.
Is online therapy actually effective?
For most people, yes — research consistently finds that video therapy works well for a wide range of concerns, and it removes commutes, waiting rooms, and scheduling stress. If it turns out not to suit you and you're in Winnipeg, we can move to home visits instead.
If you're in crisis, please don't wait for an email reply.

This website isn't an emergency service. If you or someone with you is in danger or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 (Suicide Crisis Helpline, Canada) any time, or call 9-1-1.

Ready when you are

Pull up a seat. The lamp's already on.

The first step is genuinely small: a short email, a text, or a call. No forms, no intake gauntlet — just say hello, and we'll take it from there.

Reach out however feels easiest — email, text, or a call. I respond within 1–2 business days to find a time that works for you, and everything you share is confidential.
